If you had to tell a story, do you ever wonder what story you would tell? Do you want to tell a story and wonder how to choose a topic? Seems like there are endless opportunities! When I set out to write, GIVE IT ALL AWAY, I learned a valuable lesson. When choosing a story worth telling, there is only one pillar that must prevail:
Tell the deepest story your heart has to tell
Keep going deeper and deeper into your heart until you know you’ve hit it. We all know deep in our heart what that story is. It’s usually the story that needs healing. It’s the story that’s vulnerable. It’s the story we’re afraid to tell. It’s the story that we need to tell to transform our lives. When it comes right down to it – we narrow a zillion possible subjects down to one or two choices when we are telling our deepest story.
Writing GIVE IT ALL AWAY took me directly to the center of my heart, to the center of my life and my own personal experiences, to the center of my greatest pain and struggles, to the center of my greatest joys and triumphs. There was only one deep story I could possibly tell:
The story of my life!
It bewilders me why writers and artists choose topics that don’t honor this fundamental pillar:
Tell the deepest story your heart has to tell
There’s no need to look farther than your own heart. That is where the gold lies. That is where you can make your greatest offerings to others. But I understand why writers and creatives don’t go there.
Because it’s scary! And yes it is scary! It’s vulnerable! And you will get judged!! People will misunderstand and project their own meanings on your work.
But when fear sets, find wisdom and solace in these “higher” truths:
I relinquish fear and embrace love.
Hide Nothing. Bring the shadows to the light and they will disappear. Keep them in the dark and they will grow bigger.
Healing is the most loving thing you can do.
When I am healed I am not healed alone.
I can be hurt by nothing but my thoughts.
Owning our story and loving ourselves through that process is the bravest thing that we will ever do.
Tell a story that mines love and truth.
Tell a story that inspires other people’s hearts.
What story will you tell?
